Protect Your Heart – Prevent Periodontal Disease

Studies show that your lips, tongue, and gums can impact your overall health in a bad way. What your dentist sees in your mouth could be the first sign of a disease that could affect your entire body.

According to recent findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of every two American adults (47.2%) aged 30 and over has periodontal disease. Studies show that people with periodontal disease are more likely to have health issues that could lead to more serious problems like a heart attack.

Regular visits to the dentist are important, especially for people with heart problems. Make sure you are also brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Taking care of your teeth and having a healthy diet will help your body fight against infection and disease.

Make sure to tell your dentist about any medical problems or changes to your health. In order to make decisions about your treatment, they need to know:

  • if you have been diagnosed with a heart condition;
  • if the condition is under control;
  • if there have been any other changes in your medical history;
  • the names of any drugs you are taking.

People with heart disease have a higher risk for many oral health problems. That’s why your dentist needs to know of any changes you’ve noticed in your mouth so they can be taken care of early. Talk to your dentist right away if you experience problems such as trouble chewing, bleeding or sore gums, red or swollen gums, or loose teeth.

By practicing good oral health habits and eating a healthy diet, you’ll enjoy a healthy body and a healthy mouth!
