Dr. John Greig, former MDA trustee and longtime volunteer to organized dentistry, died Friday, Jan. 6. He was 74.
Greig was a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and spent two years practicing dentistry in the U.S. Army after graduation. He opened a private practice in Bloomfield Hills, where he lived until his death.
Greig was an active member of the MDA, ADA and the Oakland County District Dental Society, where he served as editor of The Oakland County Dental Review. Greig served on the MDA Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2002, and again from 2004-05. He also served on MDA Committee on Peer Review/Ethics and the Committee on Relief, and also served as the board liaison to the Committee on Membership, Committee on Scientific Program, Committee on Peer Review/Dental Care, Committee on Health Planning, Hospital and Institutional Dental Services, and the Alliance to the MDA. Greig also served as a delegate and alternate to MDA House of Delegates and the ADA House of Delegates.
In addition, Greig served on the board of directors of Michigan Dental Companies from 1999-2008 and MDA Insurance & Financial Group Board of Directors from 2003 to the present.
After 40 years in private practice, Greig sold his practice in 2005 and focused his time and efforts volunteering for dental clinics in Detroit and Pontiac helping the underserved population receive much-needed dental care.
“Dr. Greig was an extremely kind-hearted man,” said Drew Eason, executive director of the MDA. “In addition to the time he spent helping organized dentistry through his position on the MDA Board of Trustees and then on the MDA Insurance Board of Directors, Dr. Greig volunteered his time to help those in need of dental care. He will be greatly missed.”
Craig Start, president of MDA Insurance & Financial Group, said Greig embraced organized dentistry and had the true heart of a volunteer.
“Dr Greig worked tirelessly on behalf of his fellow MDA members and the public,” Start said. “The MDA Insurance board and staff are saddened by his loss and will always remember Dr. Greig and his many contributions.”
The Greig family will receive friends at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward Avenue, Royal Oak, on Tuesday from 4 to 8p.m., and on Wednesday 10 a.m. until the memorial service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial tributes be made to the Order of Malta Medical/Dental Clinic, 1915 Lennon Road, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.
