Our understanding of the link between oral and systemic health has increased rapidly in recent years. However, physicians and dentists are rarely provided with an opportunity to discuss the oral-systemic link. The goal of this symposium is to discuss prospective research linking oral health with systemic health, using formal presentations, audience participation and panel discussions. Sessions will examine the oral/systemic link in cardiac disease, diabetes, and adverse outcomes during pregnancy.
A final session on policy and education will deal with current and future mechanisms to improve communication, collaboration and education regarding these interlinking fields of health care. To conclude each session there will be a formal panel discussion with audience participation. This will generate real-time responses from participants and will foster communication to enhance the learning experience.
This program is designed to facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration; thus physicians, dentists, basic and translational investigators, health care organization administrators and health care professionals are encouraged to attend.
At the end of this course participants should be able to:
- improve their awareness of the link between oral and systemic health;
- appreciate the need for medical and dental practitioners to communicate about health care problems;
- understand the need for change in policy and medical/dental education;
- be able to discuss and help guide future areas for research and;
- appreciate the multidisciplinary nature of oral systemic health in relation to both research activities and patient care.

As professionals, we’re expected to be leaders . . . leaders in our offices, in our roles as health care providers, in our families, our communities, and in our profession.
All of us need to spend time developing our leadership abilities — skills that help us cope with the many demands we’re faced with on a daily basis.
The MDA’s 2009 Leadership Conference can help! You’ll learn techniques to increase your confidence and ability to influence others . . . how to feel and look better . . . and how to better-understand others and the world we live in.
Leadership isn’t just about politics or running organizations. Leadership is something you do each and every day! Be the leader you were meant to be — by attending the MDA’s 2009 Leadership Conference!
Conference Speakers and Sessions
“Three Keys to Exceptional Leadership”
William Frank Diedrich, M.A.
Exceptional leadership is not about techniques. It is about creating an environment where others can succeed. Leadership is influence. Leadership is where others are confident in your decisions and they trust the person you are. Exceptional leaders are the presence of leadership. In the presence of this leadership, people naturally want to do the right thing. They want to perform at a high level.
This session will draw out the great leader that is already within you. In addition you will:
- Increase your confidence in your ability to lead well.
- Increase your ability to know what to do and when in any leadership situation.
- Increase your clarity about how to create a motivating environment that will inspire others to higher performance.
- Increase you ability to empower others.
William Frank Diedrich is a speaker, executive coach and the author of three books, including Beyond Blaming. He helps leadership teams and individual leaders increase their effectiveness through coaching and interventions, and is the author of “The Practice of Emotional Intelligence,” which was the cover story of the August 2008 Journal of the Michigan Dental Association.
“The New Top Legal Issues in Dentistry”
Dan Schulte, J.D.
This session explores the latest legal developments affecting practice, including recent court decisions. You’ll learn the developments in liability, illegal practice of dentistry, promotion, record maintenance and retention, and more. Mr. Schulte will also cover questions that are most frequently asked by Michigan Dental Association members. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to get answer to your own legal questions in a special Q&A segment.
Dan Schulte, partner in the Detroit-based law firm Kerr Russell & Weber, has served as MDA legal counsel since 2004 and is well known to MDA members as author of the popular “Dentistry and the Law” column in the MDA Journal. Schulte also serves as legal counsel to the Michigan State Medical Society.
“The Power of Feeling Your Best”
Chris Johnson, M.S.
You’ll have people asking “What’s your secret?” when you adopt these On Target Living practices. Chris has taught thousands of people how to live a life in balance and he wants to share his practices with you.
You will leave his presentation:
- inspired to reach for higher levels of energy, fitness and overall well-being;
- invigorated and motivated to take better care of yourself; and
- armed with knowledge and practical tools to take immediate action.
Chris Johnson is a nationally recognized speaker and author. For more than 25 years he has earned the reputation of providing lifestyle modification strategies with integrity and compassion. As Director of Health Wellness and Fitness and Sparrow Health System’s Michigan Athletic Club for 15 years, he pioneered one of the most successful personal training programs in the country. He holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Michigan State University, and certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine, National Academy of Sports Medicine and the American Council on Exercise, along with more than 16,000 hours of one-on-one personal training.

Jane grew up in Ann Arbor, where her father, Dr. Robert Aldrich, was an orthodontist and associated with the University of Michigan.
