As the population ages our patients’ medical histories and medication lists becomes more complex. The interaction of general health and oral health becomes more important. This lecture presents in question and answer format the following topics:
- demystification of medication lists and medical problems and learning to think like the primary medical doctor;
- medical clearness from the medical doctor’s perspective;
- updates on cancer and immunocompromised patients;
- identification of pain syndromes and pitfalls to avoid.
You’ll walk away from this course with pearls you can use in your practice the very next day. Note: this course covers Michigan’s one-hour pain management requirement.

It is estimated that 5 to 20 percent of the population of the United States struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction. All dental team members will have to deal with chemical dependence, directly or indirectly, in some way during their careers. In his informative, multimedia presentation Dr. Mead will answer the following questions:
- Have you ever wondered if a patient was taking advantage of you for pain medication? What can you do?
- What questions can you ask your patients to help identify who is chemically dependent among them?
- What would you do if you suspected a colleague, team member or friend had a problem with drugs or alcohol?
- Would you like some strategies for treating pain in chemically dependent patients?
- Are you familiar with the Michigan Automated Prescription System and what it can do for you and your office?
- What is the Michigan Dental Association’s Care and Well-being Committee and what does it do?
- What are the rules about buying and dispensing medication from your office?
This presentation promises information and tools you can use immediately at the office as well as in your everyday life. Questions will be answered about this often-ignored part of dental practice. Note: Bring your DEA number and license number to register for the MAPS program at this session.

The speaker will discuss an approach to understanding mental illness that draws from our knowledge of disease, personality, intelligence, and life-stories. He will also talk about two commonly seen and often-misunderstood psychiatric disorders encountered in dental practices -- mood disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In addition Dr. Ceresnie will discuss the scientific study of what goes right in life, and examine those things that make life worth living. The basic premise here is that human goodness and excellence are as authentic as are human flaws and inadequacies.
Dr. Ceresnie has practiced as a psychologist for more than 30 years. He is in private practice in Plymouth, Mich., evaluating and treating children, adolescents and adults.
