Alveolar deformities secondary to tooth removal can be prevented and repaired by a procedure called “extraction site (socket) preservation.” Extraction site preservation can improve esthetics and prepare the alveolus for the future placement of a dental implant(s).
Several techniques can be used to preserve the alveolus and minimize bone loss in the extraction site. The biologic rationale supporting this will be discussed. If possible, immediate placement of a dental implant can be performed. Extraction site preservation increases treatment options and offers advantages to the patient, restorative dentist and specialist. The lecture will also discuss the indications and use of one-stage narrow diameter implants to overcome the challenge of small edentulous spaces in the incisor region to obtain good esthetic results.
