Women's Aging Complexities:
Impact on Oral Health Needs
Time: 8 – 11 a.m. (Part I )
Fee: $95/DDS; $55/Staff (each session)
Seating Limit: 150
ONLINE REGISTRATION
As the numbers of aging women increase worldwide, dental professionals face significant challenges and opportunities in recognizing gender-specific health concerns that ultimately impact the overall well-being of their patients. A number of health conditions are more prevalent, and may cause different symptoms and affect women differently than men. Often, women are at greater risk for specific medical conditions and are simply unaware. Knowledge of a condition's symptoms, risk factors and preventive approaches can assist the dental professional in being more informed.
Women's aging issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and osteoporosis will be addressed along with their surprisingly strong influence on the oral cavity. This presentation will detail the current research linking systemic disease with gingival and periodontal inflammation. Aspects dealing with the aging timeline in a woman's life influencing oral health needs and the treatment approach from the registered dental hygienist will be presented.
This program will additionally provide dental professionals a detailed overview of osteoporosis and its treatments. With the issue of osteonecrosis of the jaw being prominent in the media, understanding the risk benefit ratio of treating osteoporosis with oral bisphosphonates is important for all dental professionals. In osteoporotic patients, long term treatment is essential for bone health and prevention of fracture. Routine dental care is important and should be part of the osteoporosis treatment regimen.

True Assessment of the Performance
of NiTi Systems in Root Canal Therapy
Evaluated with the Endodontic Cube
Methodology and Micro CT Scanner
Time: 8 – 11 a.m.
Fee: FREE
Seating Limit: 100
ONLINE REGISTRATION
The field of endodontics has experienced a virtual explosion of new techniques, instruments and materials. How these will stand the test of time has yet to be determined. Many manufacturers' claims and existing guidelines for selecting a NiTi file system are based on contemporary authors and lecturers; often unsubstantiated and anecdotal; based on clinical experience without a scientific, evidence-based approach.
The existing guidelines do not take recent research into account; do not discuss goals or predictable methods for obtaining clean canals; emphasize the importance of instrument sequence to shape root canals radiographically for obturation; and are based on philosophies limited by constraints of previous canal preparation instruments/techniques.

A New Way of Looking at Filling Techniques
Time: 2 – 5 p.m.
Fee: FREE
Seating Limit: 100

Until very recently, the only means to scientifically evaluate root canal filling techniques has been with radiographs or several methodologies of leakage studies — both of which have major flaws. Micro CT scanners are becoming the standard to re-evaluate previous studies as well as a new way of looking at filling techniques. Through this new method, several root canal filing techniques are analyzed and presented with an "evidence-based" approach to the clinical environment.
