LEAD: Leadership Exploration And Development Program

Beginning Fall 2014

The 2014 application deadline has passed. Applications for the 2015 LEAD Program will be accepted beginning in January.

The MDA is excited to offer our members LEAD: Leadership Exploration And Development Program. This comprehensive, 18-month program is designed to build personal leadership skills through immersion experiences within organized dentistry. No previous volunteer experience is required: participants will receive a thorough orientation to every aspect of the ADA network.

The program consists of three phases.

Phase 1:

September 2014 - September 2015

Session 1

Sept. 5, 2014: 5-hour session at MDA headquarters in Okemos

  • Leadership skills and assessment training.
  • Overview of what makes an effective volunteer.
  • How the MDA, ADA and local dental societies (tripartite) support each other and in turn, help member dentists succeed and ensure the public’s health.

Session 2

October-December 2014: 3 meetings; March 2015: 1 meeting
Immersion experiences to enhance appreciation and understanding of:

  • The roles of each component of the MDA and their importance to the tripartite and its success.
  • MDA board governance.
  • Government affairs, both state and national.
  • Philanthropic activities.
  • MDA public affairs.

Session 3

April-June 2015: 2 meetings
Immersion experiences to enhance appreciation and understanding of:

  • Peer review process.
  • MDA Insurance and MDA Services.

Other Phase 1 activity requirements include attending two component meetings, a multi-day ADA conference, two legislative events, one MDA Insurance seminar and one in-office meeting. Please note most of these events are after-hours.

Phase 2

October 2015 - March 2016
Independent group project on topic relevant to MDA/organized dentistry/dentistry, to be defined by MDA board. Presentation to MDA Board on Feb. 26, 2016.

April-May 2016
Capstone experiences including recognition ceremony at Annual Session and a trip to ADA headquarters in Chicago.

Phase 3

Participants will be invited to explore volunteer leadership roles within the MDA and its constituents.

LEAD Candidate Criteria

A maximum of 16 applicants will be chosen to participate. Candidates will complete an online application and be evaluated using the following:

  • Must be an MDA member in good standing.
  • A written paragraph that addresses “Why are you interested in participating in the MDA’s LEAD Program?”
  • Two endorsements by fellow MDA members, business professionals, clergy or similar.
  • A complete and current resume or CV.

There are no restrictions based on age or past volunteer participation. Dental students are excluded from the pilot program. Stipends and sponsorships will be provided to ensure participating is essentially a no-cost experience.
