Amalgam/Waste Management

The Michigan Dental Association is continuing to promote the American Dental Association's best management practices for amalgam waste disposal, even though efforts by some states have been to mandate the use of amalgam separators or to push the elimination of amalgam use altogether.

This section contains helpful links to information for managing your amalgam waste including a sample Mercury Reduction Plan, a Hazardous Waste Management Guide, a link to the ADA Best Management Practices, which include detailed instruction for cleaning amalgam traps and vacuum pump filters, as well as the recycling of scrap amalgam. There's also several informational articles and a link to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

By following these practices, Michigan dentists are doing their part to meet the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's pollution prevention goals of reducing the amount of mercury from amalgam particles entering the sewer system or the landfill.
