The MDA extends free membership to all dental students. Membership exposes you to life in dentistry beyond school. Membership rounds out your education by providing you with information on issues affecting dentistry today. Graduate student membership is available at nominal dues. The MDA also strongly encourages your participation in the American Student Dental Association (ASDA).
Annual Session and Detroit Dental Review
As a member, you have access to educational programs at the MDA's Annual Session. This includes several free essays and 35 registered clinics. The next Annual Session will be held in Lansing, April 22-25, 2009. There is no registration charge for Michigan Dental Association members and student members. Nonmembers must pay a registration charge of $350.
The Detroit District Dental Society also extends free admission to the Detroit Dental Review (program access subject to availability), held at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center each November.
Student Host Program
Each year the MDA sponsors the Student Host Program during the MDA Annual Session for D3 students from both dental schools. Dentist hosts are paired with a dental student. The dentist hosts cover the students' expenses.
Networking Opportunities
The MDA is made up of 26 component societies throughout the state that develop their own meeting schedules. If you would like to attend one of the component meetings, simply call the MDA at (800) 589-2632, ext. 415 or 424. This opportunity gives you great exposure to successful individuals in dentistry, with the chance to develop mentor relationships.
If you are interested in getting involved in other ways, let the MDA know.
Insurance Programs and Endorsed Products
MDA Insurance offers dental students several insurance programs at cost-saving group rates. Auto, health, and liability insurance are just some of the programs available to you.
MDA Services endorses a number of products and services and offers them to members at reduced rates. These items include cellular phones, latex gloves, credit cards, travel discounts, practice financing, plus much more. The list of MDA-endorsed programs is constantly growing. For information on endorsed products and insurance, call (800) 860-2272, ext. 446, or visit the MDA Insurance and MDA Services websites.
Committee Representation
A student from each of the dental schools sits on every MDA committee. If you are interested in participating on a committee, let both the Dean's office and your school's American Student Dental Association (ASDA) officers know of your interest.
On-Campus Programming
The MDA's Special Committee on the New Dentist sponsors several on-campus events for dental students. Program topics range from financial survival after school to learning how to find an associate position. These programs are typically done in the winter. Watch your mail for details and check out the MDA website for announcements.
MDA Journal
All dental students receive a complimentary monthly subscription to the informative MDA Journal, as well as full access to the MDA's website.
