This session will give you the newest research on how cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as heart attacks and strokes happen and what you can do about them. One of the critical factors recently discovered that plays a major role in causing heart attacks and strokes is inflammation. The speaker will discuss the risk factors for inflammation and educate you about a new test that measures inflammation. Inflammation is of special importance to the dental profession because it may explain why poor dental health is linked to CVD. You will learn to "Know Your Numbers" and "Fix Your Numbers" to prevent or early detect CVD.

You will also learn how to make smart supplement choices based on good science. The speaker will explore the most credible evidence for safety and effectiveness based on the latest studies for the most widely used dietary supplements and herbal products to determine which ones work and which ones don’t. Dietary supplement interactions with prescribed meds and the potential for toxic effects with surgeries will also be a focus. It is estimated that 5 to 20 percent of the population of the United States struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction. All dental team members will have to deal with chemical dependence, directly or indirectly, in some way during their careers. In his informative, multimedia presentation Dr. Mead will answer the following questions:

  • Have you ever wondered if a patient was taking advantage of you for pain medication? What can you do?
  • What questions can you ask your patients to help identify who is chemically dependent among them?
  • What would you do if you suspected a colleague, team member or friend had a problem with drugs or alcohol?
  • Would you like some strategies for treating pain in chemically dependent patients?
  • Are you familiar with the Michigan Automated Prescription System and what it can do for you and your office?
  • What is the Michigan Dental Association’s Care and Well-being Committee and what does it do?
  • What are the rules about buying and dispensing medication from your office?

This presentation promises information and tools you can use immediately at the office as well as in your everyday life. Questions will be answered about this often-ignored part of dental practice. Note: Bring your DEA number and license number to register for the MAPS program at this session.

The speaker will discuss an approach to understanding mental illness that draws from our knowledge of disease, personality, intelligence, and life-stories.
