The relative shrinkage of manufacturing has forced Michigan into a long and difficult structural transformation. Since the summer of 2000, Michigan has lost more than 800,000 jobs, which is more than one of every six jobs that we had at the beginning of the slide. The people of Michigan can have a much brighter economic future, but the potential will only be fulfilled if we make changes.
Professor Ballard will discuss the changes that must be made to attain a better economic future. To educate our children for the economy of tomorrow, we must made investments today. It is difficult to do so, because the state budget has a chronic, structural budget deficit. Professor Ballard will discuss spending reforms and tax reforms that can address the deficit.
About the Speaker ... Dr. Charles Ballard has been on the Economics faculty at Michigan State University since 1983. He is the director of the State Survey in MSU’s Institute for Public Policy and Social Research.
