In the morning session you’ll learn that people will forget everything except how you made them feel! Research shows that practices that build their office environment around serving the patient own and dominate the market! Customer service is often confusing, complex and vague. “I’m satisfied” means nothing in today’s world. Set yourself apart from your colleagues! W.O.W. is an acronym for Weed Out Weeds. Learn how to consistently create a W.O.W. patient experience and ultimately grow the practice.

In the afternoon session, discover how to elevate your communication to a level that inspires open communication, prevents breakdowns, resolves conflict, and builds trust and respect — resulting in high performing team and patient relationships! Learn skills to help you communicate positively and effectively with difficult personalities. Discover formats to hold positive, effective and efficient huddles and team meetings. Turn toxic attitudes into tremendous attitudes to create a positive environment where everyone looks forward to coming to the office.

You’ve treated the patient with stomatitis with two or three courses of antifungals but his mouth still looks unhealthy. You’ve tried topical steroids repeatedly on those oral lesions but they never seem to improve. Your patient undergoes scaling and root planing and routine cleanings every three to four months, yet his periodontium still doesn’t look healthy. Is there anything else that can be done for these patients? Is there anything else that is being overlooked? This lecture will allow you to think outside the box and try different treatment approaches that you haven’t tried before. Is there a role for probiotics, vitamins and supplements in your practice? Explore these topics and more.

What do you do with that patient who is constantly clenching and stressed? What do you do with that patient who presents complaining of jaw pain, headaches and fractured restorations? You’ve tried a night guard, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories — but to no avail. Is there something else that can be done for these patients? This lecture will focus on the underlying pathophysiology of neurotransmitter imbalances that may manifest as stress, anxiety, clenching and grinding. Learn what vitamins and supplements you can use to naturally up-regulate inhibitory neurotransmitters and down-regulate excitatory neurotransmitters.

NOTE: This course covers Michigan’s one hour pain management requirement.

About the speaker ... Dr. Alamat practices the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery and lectures on the medical aspects of dentistry.

This course will allow the general practitioner to survey the current landscape of medical and dental treatments for sleep apnea and decide how and if he or she wants to evolve into this life-saving arena. The overview will cover marketing, physician communication, basic treatment philosophies, appliance choices, medical billing and the financial and emotional impact on your practice and team. Sleep medicine has progressed in both the diagnosis and treatment protocol and outcome predictability. It is estimated that 25 percent of the population is at risk for this life-threatening condition, and dentistry is at the front lines. This course is an overview to help you determine if you want to treat these patients. It is not a substitute for full training in sleep dentistry. Other, more involved, courses will be discussed and compared.

Learning objectives:

  • create a general understanding of the sleep-related conditions and the role of the dental team;
  • effectively communicate with physicians and their offices;
  • develop a matrix for marketing sleep appliance therapy to current patients and prospects;
  • understand the medical billing process and the financial and emotional impact on your practice.

By 2030, the number of Americans 65 years and older is expected to swell to 71 million, representing one-fifth of Americans. These demographic changes are due to increased life expectancy and an aging baby boomer population. Four out of five older adults live with one or more chronic conditions and are taking multiple medications (prescribed, over-the-counter and herbals/supplements) concurrently. They are at higher risk of serious adverse events due to age-related physiological changes, polypharmacy, drug–drug/herb interactions and inappropriate prescribing. This course will review:

  • age-related physiological changes and the impact of drug therapy;
  • current drug information sources;
  • how to recognize drugs with serious adverse potential (adverse effects and drug interactions) in an aging population;
  • pharmacological and therapeutic considerations when managing elderly patients in a general dentistry practice.

About the Speaker ... Dr. Foong is a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical and Diagnosis Sciences at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.
