Creating an employee handbook is great way to communicate expectations to your staff, but it goes far beyond that. A well-written handbook can be a lifesaver when it comes to managing difficult situations — such as suspected substance abuse in the workplace, harassment claims, requests for accommodations or leaves of absence, basic confidentiality, and social media do’s and don’ts. However, due to the time involved in creating and/or updating a handbook, many well-intentioned dentists and office managers have had to go without — until now.

This HR handbook workshop will guide you through what should and should not be included in your employee manual, and will then provide you with the necessary time to create/update your own handbook the same day, so you leave with a finished product in your hand! This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with others in the group and benefit from input from the trusted MDA human resources expert Jodi Schafer. Due to the nature of the workshop, space is limited, so register today!

As a bonus, the Michigan Dental Association’s Staff Matters® Human Resource System (electronic version) is included in the seminar price — normally valued at $149.

About the speaker ... Jodi Schafer is owner of Human Resource Management Services, LLC.

  • review current spine research on the production of headache, TMJ and facial pain;
  • be able to conduct a two minute cervical or lumbar history and examination;
  • construct a specific pain-relieving exercise program for you or your patients; and
  • learn how the cervical spine produces clenching, unexplainable tooth pain, mid-back, arm, shoulder, and hand pain and tingling.

In the morning session the speaker will discuss the changing antibiotic options in dentistry for acute infections and prophylaxis for old and new antibiotic categories and formulations. The current American Heart Association at-risk patients and inconsistencies with the ADA/Orthopedic Surgeons 2014 recommendations will be discussed. What is recommended for patients already on, or recently on an antibiotic? New data and designs dictate a new approach to cardiac and vascular stents. You’ll discover the bottom line on prophylaxis for vascular repairs; the four approaches to renal dialysis; IVC filters; Hickman catheters; portacaths; and VA vs. VP hydrocephalus shunts. You’ll also learn which medical conditions affect antibiotic selections.

Medical problems such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension therapy, anticoagulant therapy, and drugs for many cardiovascular diseases directly affect dental treatment-planning and prescriptions written by dentists. This course will provide dentists with a framework for choosing antibiotics, analgesics, local anesthetics and other top-50 dental prescriptions in the context of potential drug-drug interactions and disease-related complications of medically compromised patients.

Predictable patient care can be elusive to achieve. As dentists, we put our heart and soul into making our treatments successful, and yet much to our dismay things don’t always work out. Dr. Portenoy will present clinical stories of both patient success and failure. He will explore the technical and behavioral systems in comprehensive restorative dentistry that can make even the most complex treatment predictable and rewarding. This informative and interactive presentation can help your entire team achieve both more predictability with patients and happier practice lives.

You will learn:

  • philosophic constructs you can use to help create predictability and get the patient to say “yes” to your treatment;
  • behavioral systems employed by the speaker that help to determine a patient’s values toward dentistry and expectations of treatment;
  • how to develop interdisciplinary dentistry with specialists in order to achieve predictable treatment results; and
  • how to use a time-tested, predictable, clinical protocol to take the patient from his first visit to completed complex or simple restorative treatment.

About the speaker ... Dr. Portenoy maintains a private practice devoted to comprehensive dentistry and implant surgery in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
