Increasing numbers of dental patients are uncontrolled hypertensives or diabetics with complex oral health problems. Many new cardiovascular, central nervous system, and endocrine drugs can interact with dental drugs or affect bleeding or wound healing. Patient self-medication with supplements and over-the-counter drugs has recently been recognized as potentially risky in dentistry. Consequently, more and more patients report chemical and drug allergies and intolerances. Dental professionals are frequently faced with medically complex and chemically challenged patients and need practical strategies for providing safe and appropriate care. The purpose of this course is to identify new drug-related problems encountered in dental practice and to outline practical management solutions. Extensive handouts will supplement discussion of intra-oral drug effects and treatment modifications involving medicated or allergic patients. Drug and supplement references will be compared and recommendations about clinical usefulness will be discussed. Controversial issues related to dental pain management, dietary supplement dangers, and dental drug interactions will be presented. Throughout the program, primary emphasis will be placed on developing consistent strategies for treating medically complex dental patients. An extensive and very current handout will greatly enhance the chair-side value of this fast-paced, comprehensive and practical course.

After attending this course and reviewing the handouts, the participant should be able to:

  • recognize the specific dental treatment modifications necessary to prevent complications in patients with major cardiovascular or central nervous system disorders;
  • prescribe NSAIDs and opiate combinations based on new or updated guidelines;
  • modify dental treatment for patients on new chronic medications for diabetes, asthma, gastroesophogeal reflux disease (GERD) and rheumatoid arthritis; and
  • identify the chronic medications or dietary supplements likely to precipitate major interactions with dental antibiotics, analgesics, local anesthetics, and anesthesia agents.

NOTE: This class covers the State’s required one-hour credit for pain management.

About the speaker ... Karen Baker is on faculty at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.

Financial support provided by MDA Insurance, MDA Services, Crest Oral B Professional Oral Health, and Dr. Gary Asano.

As the practice owner, the dentist wears many hats. None is more important, from a leadership perspective, than strategic planning and guiding the practice into the right direction. Mr. Nurenberg will review how to guide the practice by tracking key practice indicators, and he will explain what happens to the bottom line when no indicators are tracked. He will also explain how to ensure proper systems stay in place. By the end of the day, you will understand why taking care of the money in the practice is paramount to a first-level leadership strategy.

Dr. Lisa Knowles will build on Curt’s leadership and financial topics with a discussion focusing on our core purpose in dentistry. She will challenge current models in place and discuss the importance of practicing with a purpose. She will touch on how to become a desirable leader by remaining objective, holding others accountable, and seeking outside resources to maintain personal balance and motivation. She will also offer a variety of coping mechanisms for handling the stress and pressure placed upon dentists in this leadership role. These second level leadership skills will help doctors relate better to their team members and to their patients. The overall result will be higher production, less stress, and better on-going communication.

Jodi Schafer will discuss how personalities influence behavior and affect team dynamics. She will focus on the importance of coaching and explain what it means to be an influential leader. Attendees will learn an effective way to diagnose the root cause of employee problems in the workplace and learn how to successfully broach the difficult conversations many would rather avoid. The speaker will culminate with a review of what to do when the train falls off the human resources track and none of the strategies seem to be working. Ms. Schafer will help dentists reach third-level leadership skills.

About the speakers ... Curt Nurenberg works with the Rehmann Group from Lansing, Mich. Dr. Lisa Knowles founded Intentional Dental Consulting with the determination of guiding others to think beyond 32 teeth in the way you practice dentistry. Jodi Schafer is owner of Human Resource Management Services, LLC.
