Rachel DeBoer: 2009-10 Mitus Scholarship Winner

Rachel DeBoer, of Byron Center, is a dental assisting student attending Grand Rapids Community College, who decided upon a dental career as a way of helping people and bettering their lives.

“I think the thing I enjoy most about the field of dentistry is just the fact that I am able to work with people along with being able to use my hands,” she explained. “There is such a wide range of procedures and different ways of doing things that you never get bored.”

According to DeBoer, she knew dental assisting was her calling on the first day of my dental assisting internship.

“I knew this way of interacting as a team, as well the interactions the staff had with their patients, was something I wanted to have,” she said. “It was relief to me that my love for dental assisting in school was also true in the dental practice.”

DeBoer credits Julie Bera, her dental assisting instructor, and her fiancé, Michael Wierenga, a dental student at the University of Michigan, as the people who have most inspired and mentored her along the way. She said the best advice she received is to work hard and apply herself while in school.

After graduation, DeBoer said she hopes to be working in Ann Arbor in a private practice. Further down the road she hopes to have advanced her dental assisting skills and be happily working in a practice as well as being involved within the dental community. She’s already attended the Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting and enjoyed seeing all the different vendors and all the new advances as well as learning how different products are used and can better a procedure.

“I would like to participate in the area of organized dentistry, probably more on the local or state level,” DeBoer said. “My dental assisting professor, Julie Bera, serves on the Michigan Board of Dentistry and I have learned through her how cool it is to be aware of what is going on in the field of dentistry in our state.”

In addition to enjoying dental assisting, DeBoer enjoys working as a hairstylist, shopping, going to the beach, and spending time with family and friends.
