Kelly Therrian is a senior dental hygiene student at the Lansing Community College. She chose dental hygiene as her professional pursuit after a conversation with a retired dental hygienist she met while vacationing in Colorado.
While the first spark of inspiration came from that hygienist, Therrian said her instructor at Lansing Community College, Vicki Koren, “taught me to stay positive and work hard.”
While working in a “rover” position at Dr. George Grein’s office in East Lansing, Therrian said she realized just how much she loved dental hygiene. At the same time, she knew dental hygiene would be a demanding field, and as a student, she was not going to be perfect.
“It is a hard program, but worth every minute,” she explained. “But, this is the time to make mistakes and to grow into the profession.”
In the immediate future, she sees herself working and completing her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Further down the road Therrian said she’d enjoy teaching at a college or university while still working a couple of days a week. She’s also taken an interest in organized dentistry, and has attended local dental meetings.
“I really like the idea of becoming an active member of ADHA,” she said. “I currently am the liaison for the senior class and I would love to continue that same type of position.”
When not working or attending school, Therrian can be found engaging in her favorite pastime: running. She’s completed a triathlon and a half marathon, but is waiting for the day when she has more time to train and compete in a full marathon.
Therrian said she appreciates receiving the Foundation scholarship because it has eased her stress and allowed her to concentrate on studying for the National Board Exams instead of paying for the exam.
