The Michigan Dental Association, founded in 1856, is the oldest professional association in Michigan and the oldest dental association in continuous existence in the United States. The MDA consists of more than 5,500 members, representing 75 percent of the dentists in Michigan.
The MDA is a constituent society of the American Dental Association, and all MDA members are also members of the ADA. Likewise, the MDA is comprised of 26 local dental societies around the state. The Michigan Dental Association is headquartered in Okemos, Mich. Its staff is headed by Interim CEO/Executive Director Grace DeShaw-Wilner, CAE.
The MDA serves as “Michigan’s Oral Health Authority Dedicated to the Public and the Profession” and is guided by integrity, ethics and is committed to the improvement of the public's overall health. The MDA believes:
- oral health is integral to overall health;
- in an inclusive environment that embraces diversity;
- that the profession of dentistry and the oral health team must be led by dentists to ensure the safety of the public; and
- that life-long learning is critical to excellence in patient care.
